SAOS’s Bob Yuill addresses ICOS Conference in Ireland

Yesterday was the annual national conference of our sister organisation in Ireland, the Irish Co-oprative Organsiation Society. The theme for the day was  Climate Change & Animal Welfare – Opportunities for Co-ops

SAOS’s Deputy Chief Executive, Bob Yuill, who is also Managing Director of the livestock traceability system – ScotEID, was in attendance as part of the panel discussing ‘Animal Welfare – Protecting our Social Licence’.

Answering questions on welfare of dairy bull calves and development of markets, Bob pointed to the success of formal Producer Organisations (PO’s) and how these provide a mechanism for producers working together to invest in research and development of genetics, techniques and procedures,  as well as new channels to market.

On welfare, individual monitoring of health data such as temperature and mobility using low power sensors are the future and the technology is available now.  Being able to provide markets with assurance using data evidence concerning welfare, environment and transport might become crucial.
